PhD student data science / epidemiology

Are you a data scientist or epidemiologist who is eager to make a difference for patients with esophageal cancer in the Netherlands? Within this project you will develop prediction models to identify patients with esophageal cancer who have persistent gastrointestinal symptoms after their treatment. For this project, we are looking for a:  


PhD student data science / epidemiology
36 hours per week
IKNL location Eindhoven, Radboudumc Nijmegen and hybrid

In this research project, funded by the Dutch digestive foundation, you will develop prediction models on data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry combined with patient reported outcomes. You will be working with a group of medical specialists, data scientists, researchers and patient representatives from different institutes.   

Your tasks

  • coordinate the project, including filing data requests and linking datasets from different sources
  • develop prediction models, based on machine learning, to identify patients with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms after treatment for esophageal cancer based on data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (patient- and tumor characteristics), DUCA (details regarding surgery) and POCOP (self-reported symptoms)
  • develop a strategy for implementation of the prediction models in clinical practice
  • various activities concerning the registration and report of data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry
  • publish and present results in international journals and on conferences
  • join the esophageal research group at IKNL and Radboudumc with (bi-)weekly research meetings with other PhD students and medical specialists


We ask

  • a MSc degree (or equivalent) in data science or epidemiology, with strong affinity for healthcare
  • affinity with developing prediction models
  • good programming skills and experience with Python and/or R
  • an enthusiastic team player who can easily communicate and collaborate across different disciplines as you will be working with researchers, data scientists, medical specialists and patient representatives
  • excellent communication and organizational skills

You will be formally employed at IKNL, but you will be working (based on a guest appointment) at the department of surgery at Radboudumc for approximately 1 day a week. The thesis defense will take place at Amsterdam UMC.
